How an AI-generated song by Drake and The Weeknd went viral and was removed by Spotify

The song 'Heart On My Sleeveperformed by Drake and The Weeknd, has become a viral phenomenon on social media, but Spotify and Apple Music have removed the song because it was created using artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic the artists' voices.

YouTube user @ghostwriter was the creator of the original version of the song, in which it used AI-trained audio models to generate the first music sample produced with this technology. Since it was released on Friday, the song has been viewed more than 8.5 million times on TikTok and the full version has been played 254,000 times on Spotify.

According to a report by the BBCthe song's video was removed from the streaming platforms due to a copyright claim from Universal Music Group (UMG). Drake and The Weeknd's music hits are being released by UMG through Republic Records, and the company has issued a communiqué in which he points out that the use of AI is a challenge for music. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has also advised that AI could be used to avoid copyright.

Despite this, the song does not infringe copyrightas it appears to be a completely original composition. @Ghostwriter made it clear that Drake and The Weeknd were not involved in the creation of the song, which in theory protects them from an accusation of forgery.

In response to the situation, a broad group of musicians has launched the 'Human Art Campaign' to protect human creativity in the face of AI. Backed by the Recording Industry Association of America, the Association for Independent Music and BIS, the group has published seven basic principles of AI for protect copyrights in the music industry.
