Italy blocks OpenAI's AI tool ChatGPT for violating data protection law

Italy announced today that it will immediately block the use of the Artificial Intelligence tool ChatGPT from the company OpenAI, claiming that it violates consumer data protection law. The Italian guarantor for the Protection of Personal Data has launched an investigation and the block will remain in place until ChatGPT complies with privacy standards.

The popular ChatGPT, capable of simulating human conversations, has come under fire in the United States, where several organizations have called for its suspension due to concerns about its use in Artificial Intelligence experiments. According to the Italian agency, the chat suffered a loss of user data and subscriber payment data on March 20, 2009..

The Italian guarantor highlighted the lack of information to users and the absence of a legal basis to justify the massive collection of personal data by OpenAI. In addition, it has pointed out that the answers generated by ChatGPT do not always correspond to reality and that there is no adequate filter to verify the age of users, exposing children to inappropriate answers.

The use of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common and UNESCO has urged countries to implement the Global Ethical Framework on this technology, unanimously adopted by all 193 member states in 2021, without delay.
